Fad Diets

Quick dieting or intense dieting when there is little time to get in shape involves going in for a restricted eating plan. This is known a fad diet. It involves restricted eating which could be unhealthy and lack sufficient nutrition and calories. Certain liquid-only diets that are advertised as healthful diets are actually fad diets. Other types of fad diets are the Grapefruit diet and the Cabbage soup diet.

The obsession of following fad diets results from the fact that people believe that they can get in the desired shape quickly and with the least efforts. It is not that the fad diets do not work. They do, but only in the beginning. Later, as time goes by, sustaining restricted eating habits becomes difficult. Also it is difficult to curb the intake of certain groups of food. Hence as one goes back to the original eating patterns, the weight also returns.

Fad diets are followed in order to lose weight fast. The weight loss does occur early on but if followed over a long time, these diets may provoke certain health problems. If weight loss is the target, a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and whole grains should be followed. Physical activity along with a healthy and balanced diet is what is required for a balanced and long term weight loss.
