Water Fasting

Water Fasting

For thousand of years, fasting has been a method of health recovery. It can be defined as a state of physiological rest during which the body undertakes the repairing and self-strengthening mechanisms to heal the damaged organs. Fasting also cleanses the body from accumulated waste products and toxins.

Water fasting is also a way of fasting in which only water is consumed. Water fasting helps in detoxification as the digestive tract and organs can rest and the energy is used for healing of damaged tissues. Also as no food is consumed, the fat reserves are used for energy, thus releasing the accumulated toxins from the body.

Water fasting is also done as a means of losing weight. It is true that initially there is incredible weight loss as the toxins from the body starts getting eliminated. The digestive tract is cleansed and one experiences fullness and there is less craving for food. But water fasting as a weight loss method does have some drawbacks. Care should be taken while water fasting as the body after initial weight loss goes into survival mode and turns to the muscle tissues for energy. This can lead to tiredness and dizziness. Hence water fasting is not recommended for those who are hypo or hyper glycemic or suffer from other medical complications and so one should always consult a physician before going in for any kind of fasting.
